Tamil Nadu & Tripura: PMU for NGO Partnerships Management

Madhi Foundation was established in 2016 as a non-profit organisation working in the education sector, committed to the cause of bridging the equity gap in education for children across India. Madhi currently works with Samagra Shiksha, Tamil Nadu and State Council for Educational Research and Training in all schools across the state.

Madhi Foundation has signed an MoU with Samagra Shiksha to implement the Foundational Learning Improvement Programme (FLIP). FLIP aims to improve the Foundational Learning skills of children studying in grades 1, 2 and 3 in government schools in Chennai and Thiruvannamalai Districts.

Vidhya Vidhai a not for profit, Chennai based organization that strives to ensure Quality education for every child. Coming from Azim Premji’s school of thought, Vidhya Vidhai is supported by organizations like Advaith Foundation (A family initiative of Mr. Shibulal, Co-founder of Infosys), WellsFargo and Shiv Nadar Foundation for its good deeds to improve the quality in education.

Vidhya Vidhai partners with Government schools and low income private schools in Tamil Nadu for a period of 3 years. During this journey a School Transformation Lead, stays in school thrice every week to support the School Leaders and Teachers to develop better teaching-learning practices and leadership practices for better student outcomes. Currently we are impacting 6000 Children from 11 schools across Tamil Nadu.

Sri Aurobindo Society has been recognised by the Government of India as a charitable organisation, a research institute and as an institution of importance throughout India. For the last 55 years, Sri Aurobindo Society has been working with students and teachers in private schools as well as at the grass root level across India to develop innovative strategies for education improvement.

Sri Aurobindo Society (SAS) has committed to three programs in Tamil Nadu as per MoU: Zero Investment Innovation for Educational Initiatives (ZIIEI), Innovative Pathashala and Project Inclusion.

AVVAI VILLAGE WELFARE SOCIETY shortly known as “Avvai” was initiated on 6th February 1978. It works among children, women, elders and disaster affected in the sectors of education, child rights & child protection, pre primary education, health, women empowerment, de-addiction, elder care, disaster risk management and climate change adaptation.

Hygiene Promotion in Primary Schools (HEPS) is being implemented in Thiruvallur and Perambalur districts. Objective of HEPS is to improve Knowledge, Attitude and Practices (KAP) on Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) related issues among 1,25,000 Primary school children through pedagogy-based approaches on the modules developed by Reckitt Benckiser (RB) India Ltd. in partnership with Butterfly Fields and XSEED.

Sol’s ARC is a registered non-profit organization established in 2003, under the Charitable Trust Act of Mumbai, working towards transforming education. We conduct innovative education research to build inclusive learning content, ensuring every child can learn and that our innovation will reach the last mile.

Sol’s ARC is the only organization in India working towards Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 to ensure inclusive and quality education for all to promote lifelong learning. We have developed a unique framework that makes the national curriculum inclusive and accessible for individuals with learning lags from preschool to higher education. We believe that this innovation will be one of the key factors in reversing the statistics significantly.

STiR runs the Intrinsic motivation program in cycles of 3 months which are termed as Learning Improvement Cycles (LIC). Each LIC is based on a theme which contributes to the overall improvement in the intrinsic motivation of the teachers. The teachers take part in Network meetings to discuss among themselves on the theme and learn from each other facilitated by the CRTEs.

The program was launched in Vellore district in the month of November 2018 with ‘Enabling Classroom environment through Growth Mindset’ as the Learning Improvement Cycle (LIC- 0) theme (December 2018 to February 2019). For the year of 2019-20, the program was scaled up in Villupuram and Dharmapuri districts in addition to Vellore district with Establishing Classroom Routines as the theme for the Learning Improvement Cycle (LIC-1) from July 2019 to November 2019. The program to be expanded from 3 to 16 districts for 2020-21.

The Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) is a global network of over 194 affiliated researchers who use randomized evaluations to answer critical policy questions in the fight against poverty. Our mission is to reduce poverty by ensuring that policy is informed by scientific evidence. We do this through research, policy outreach, and training.

J-PAL South Asia has conducted randomized evaluations in the education sector across 14 states in India. A few examples of completed and ongoing J-PAL education research projects in collaboration with various state governments in India include Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Odisha and Rajasthan.

In partnership with the Samagra Shiksha, Tamil Nadu, J-PAL is implementing a project called Math Games, innovative game-based Mathematics curriculum for pre-school students, developed by psychologists based at the Laboratory for Development Studies at Harvard University, and tested for its effectiveness on a range of learning outcomes through three randomized evaluations conducted in Delhi. The curriculum has been developed to improve school math performance i.e. symbolic math abilities by strengthening innate numerical and geometrical abilities i.e. non-symbolic math abilities.

Vidya Sagar, formerly called Spastics Society of India – Madras, was started on 15th March 1985 to cater to the needs of people with disabilities specifically those with complex needs. The needs of the students and families through the years has led to setting up of a wide range of comprehensive services catering to children from infancy to adults.

They have partnered with Samagra Shiksha,Tamil Nadu for the implementation of the project ‘Ellarum Ellamum’ to work together to improve quality of inclusion and participation of children with disabilities in government schools in areas where Vidya Sagar’s Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) programme operates.

AIF is a philanthropy platform connecting the two largest democracies to fight poverty in India. AIF works towards transforming the lives of India’s most disadvantaged communities through better health, education and livelihoods. In Tripura, AIF proposes to

1. (i) design learning and bridging programs and vocational/life-skills education programs for the students of the residential hostels under Samagra Shiksha, Tripura,
2. (ii) Formulate child protection policy and procedures for the quality management of the residential hostels under Samagra Shiksha, Tripura, and
3. (iii) Support the State in setting up of 10 Learning Resource Centres involving the local community in Sonamura sub-division in Tripura.

• The mission of CCF is “To facilitate social inclusion and education of deprived children and disabled, to motivate youth, instill hope and trust among the elderly and empower women through relevant education, advocacy, awareness programs, skill development, and promotion of art and culture.”
• In Tripura, CCF proposes to work on capacity building of primary class teachers employed in 400 Government Schools by training them on the skill of storytelling, empowering them to use the art of storytelling as a teaching strategy.

• Founded in 2010 the Ahvaan Trust is a not-for-profit organization that works with government school teachers, developing and training them to become the best educators they can be.
• In Tripura, Ahvaan as an immediate response to COVID19 sitaution proposes to support the State with engaging with pre-primary children of Tripura during Covid induced lockdown

• TTF works with schools, principals, school-administrators, teachers and teacher educators in the areas of school development & improvement, teacher development, technology enabled training and support, design and production of teaching aids and classroom-resources.
• In Tripura, The Teacher Foundation(TTF) proposes to implement its Coachinf for School Sucess (CFSS)-online program to mentor 4 Expert Master Trainers, who will in-turn train 220 Academic coordinators.

• Tech Mahindra Foundation is the corporate social responsibility arm of Tech Mahindra Ltd. Established in 2007, under Section 25 of the Companies Act (now Section 8), it is today active in 12 cities across India .The Foundation works in three key verticals – education, skill development and disability
• In Tripura, TMF proposes to provide consultancy services for “Improving In-Service Teacher Education by improving the academic efficiency of two of the DIETs and professional development of Academic Leaders”

CBM is an international development organization committed to improving the quality of life of persons with disabilities in developing nations. They will support the Saksham Tripura mission, and formulating state policy for inclusive education.

• Adhyayan Foundation seeks to improve the leadership and governance of teaching and learning in schools.
• Adhyayan will support the State and its partner NGOs, to establish systems and processes to run data-driven school complexes that are accountable to improvement across various school quality standards.

Vision Empower is a not-for-profit enterprise which empowers children with visual impairment through inclusive education. They will support and train teachers to work with children with blindness by:

1. Creating accessible content
2. ii) Training of teachers
3. iii) Providing access to assistive technology.

Sterlite Tech Foundation will support the State to pivot towards competency based teaching and assessment. The program aims to integrate technology in training and classroom teaching by setting up Smart Classes.
