Amitav Virmani | Founder & CEO

Amitav is the Founder and CEO of The Education Alliance, a non-profit organization focused on improving the quality of education in Government schools. TEA works with the state governments of Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, NCT Delhi and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi on education reform initiatives. TEA’s focus areas include foundational literacy & numeracy, management information systems, public-private partnerships, school consolidation, teacher professional development, spoken English, schools of specialized excellence and student assessments.  

Prior to founding The Education Alliance, Amitav was the Country Director for ARK India, a UK-based NGO. Amitav and his team ran programs focused on school leadership, English language literacy, school vouchers, and school quality assessments.

Amitav worked for Bristol Myers Squibb, a Pharma company based in Princeton for 5 years. He has also been involved with his family-run food processing and real-estate businesses in Punjab since 1994. 

Amitav studied at the Doon School and graduated in Economics from St. Stephens College, Delhi University. He has an MBA from UNC Chapel Hill, USA. He sits on the board of Childrens Book Trust, Virmani Education Trust, Virmani Public School (Chairperson), Teach for India, Delhi (Chairperson), The Blind Relief Association, Gargi College (Ex-Chairperson), Durgabai Deshmukh College for Visually Impaired (Chairperson) SRF Foundation, Shri Educare, Kama Holdings, CAPED and The Shri Ram Schools.   

Amitav is also an Aspen, Ashoka and N/Core Fellow.
